About Matthew

I’m an artist and music maker based in Charlotte, North Carolina. I’m originally from California, where I met and married my wife and partner-in-crime, Elizabeth.

The long version

Throughout middle school and high school I played and made music, in addition to painting and drawing. When I graduated from high school, I decided I wanted to be an artist and focused on illustration.

I graduated from art college in 2007, and quickly gave up on art.

I had a lot of student loan debt and very few marketable job skills. I taught myself how to code and build websites, which eventually led me to marketing technology where I found well-paying jobs and security; I followed the money and gave up on my dreams.

Fast forward to middle age; something was nagging at me. It was something a teacher from college once told me: “there’s nothing sadder than someone saying they used to make art.” That was me. When Elizabeth and I moved to North Carolina from California I basically stopped creating art. It got to the point where I hadn’t picked up a drawing or painting tool in eight years.

But then the pandemic hit and I did something simple: I bought a cheap Casio keyboard because I thought it would be nice to just bang around on it and make some noise. I discovered that I could hook it up to my MacBook in GarageBand and make rudimentary sound loops. It was satisfying. After years and years without a creative outlet I suddenly had something new, and more importantly, I was making music on a regular basis and it became a practice for me.

The nagging feeling was still there though: I had yet to resume drawing and I missed it, but I was afraid to start again. Every time I sat down to draw, nothing came out. I believed it was because I wasn’t “inspired.”

In 2026, I left my marketing technology job to take a much needed break.

With a whole lot of time on my hands, I knew (or felt) that it was now or never to establish a drawing practice. If I could establish a music making practice, why couldn’t I establish a drawing practice?

That’s the purpose of this website: to share the work of my newly created drawing practice, along with the music I’m creating. It’s about learning how to draw again; learning how to make marks; learning how to hold a paintbrush; basic stuff, and without judgment. I officially started drawing again on June 29, 2026.

The commitment is low: my goal is to draw four days a week, for 30-minute blocks. Whatever is produced, I’ll share it here, along with a sound loop I created from the week.

The goal is to establish a practice that lasts for the rest of my life.

Let’s see where it goes.
